Officials say at least 13 people have died following a Ukrainian drone strike on Russia’s republic of Tatarstan.

Among those killed was a child, and authorities reported that a further 75 people were wounded, making it one of the deadliest individual attacks on Russian territory since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Kyiv has not yet issued a statement regarding the assault on Nizhnekamsk, a city located more than 1,100 kilometres (680 miles) from Ukraine’s border.

Ukraine’s Armed Forces stated that the Tanevo oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk was struck, while Ukrainian defence technology company FirePoint said its FP-1 drones were deployed in the operation.

According to local reports, the attack continued for several hours overnight and into the early morning.

Verified footage circulating on social media shows thick columns of smoke and flames rising into the sky during daylight, accompanied by the sound of air raid sirens.

While officials have not formally confirmed the precise targets, Ukraine has recently intensified strikes on sites it claims support Russia’s military effort financially or logistically.

Russian authorities acknowledged that both industrial facilities and residential buildings were hit. The Investigative Committee stated that civilians not involved in military activities were present at the locations. These claims have not been independently confirmed.

Tatarstan’s regional head, Rustam Minnikhanov, confirmed the incident and expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.

Nizhnekamsk mayor Radmir Belayev described the tragedy as “a profound sorrow for everyone.”

Regional officials have declared a period of mourning across Tatarstan.

Ukrainian forces had previously targeted oil refineries in Nizhnekamsk on 12 June.

Overnight, Russian air defence systems reportedly intercepted and destroyed more than 450 Ukrainian drones, according to Moscow.

Ukraine has increasingly demonstrated its ability to conduct long-range attacks inside Russia, frequently focusing on energy sites and storage facilities, with civilian casualties rising in some instances.

At the same time, Russia continues to launch extensive aerial assaults on Ukrainian cities and residential areas. Last week, a coordinated drone and missile strike on Kyiv resulted in 21 deaths.

In Kharkiv, a city close to the front line, five people were killed overnight during a Russian artillery bombardment.
