Man scales Everest’s height to raise awareness on climate change
A man has completed an ascent equivalent to the height of Mount Everest, all in a bid to highlight the issue of climate change.
Chris Horan, aged 44 from Corfe Mullen, Dorset, scaled a total of 8,849 meters (29,032 feet) over the span of 140 days, continuously raising over £1,700 for the environmental group Friends of the Earth.
On Thursday, he concluded his monumental effort and described the moment as "really satisfying" to finally finish.
“My elbows are incredibly tender, so I’m definitely in need of a break,” Horan revealed.
Mr. Horan mentioned he's long been fond of climbing, especially since it’s "a wonderful thing to do as a family."
He frequently enjoys climbs alongside his children, ages eight and 10.
"I took on the challenge as a shared experience with my family, and of course, the climate change issue is something that affects... their future particularly,” he explained.
"Essentially, the whole focus on climate is about them and their generation."
Originally, his goal was to climb 1.48 kilometers (about one mile), which symbolized “the 1.48-degree rise in global temperatures in 2023 compared to the long-term average.”
"Then I decided to extend the challenge by climbing to match Everest's height," he continued.
His final ascent took place in Portland, Dorset, on Thursday, followed by a celebratory meal at a Nepalese restaurant with his family.
The day after, Friday—the first day since February without a climb—Horan admitted, "I actually don’t know what to do with myself."
However, he acknowledged his body likely needed some recovery time.
"I can only sleep in one position—facedown with my arms alongside me—because otherwise, my elbows ache," he remarked.
Nonetheless, Horan hinted he would probably be back to climbing soon, possibly by the weekend.
"It’s something I still deeply enjoy," he shared.
