Turkey aims to acquire hundreds of Boeing jets and Lockheed Martin warplanes, says Bloomberg News

Sept 23 (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is preparing to purchase several hundred aircraft from American companies Boeing and Lockheed Martin, while also aiming to secure over $10 billion in related domestic manufacturing contracts, according to a Bloomberg News report citing individuals familiar with the matter.

These potential agreements will require the approval of U.S. President Donald Trump, the report mentioned.

Reuters has not independently verified the details of the report. Efforts to contact the White House, Boeing, and Lockheed Martin for comment outside of regular office hours were unsuccessful.

According to Bloomberg, Turkey's Defense Ministry declined to comment. Reuters was also unable to immediately reach the ministry for a statement.

This news emerges just days before a planned meeting between President Trump and President Erdogan at the White House on September 25.

Trump is expected to finalize trade and defense agreements during the discussions. These include a significant Boeing aircraft order, a large F-16 fighter jet deal, and ongoing negotiations about the F-35 program with Turkey.

Erdogan stated on Monday that discussions over acquiring F-35 jets will be a part of his meeting with the U.S. leader.

The relationship between the two countries was strained in 2019 when Turkey purchased Russian-made S-400 missile systems. That move led the U.S. to terminate a planned F-35 sale and remove Turkey from the joint production program.

Following that fallout, Turkey moved forward with an alternative agreement to obtain F-16 fighter jets instead.
