Ukraine claims it hit Russian airfield while Russia launched hundreds of drones into Ukraine
LONDON (AP) — Ukraine reported on Saturday that it targeted a Russian airfield, while Russia continued its intensified strikes across Ukraine with a large-scale drone assault overnight, undermining renewed hopes for progress toward resolving the war that has persisted for over three years.
According to Ukraine’s General Staff, the country’s military forces carried out an attack on the Russian Borisoglebsk airfield, located in the Voronezh region. The site is identified as a base for Russian Su-34, Su-35S, and Su-30SM military aircraft.
In a Facebook post, Ukrainian military officials stated they struck a munitions warehouse storing glide bombs, a training jet, and potentially more aircraft.
Russian authorities have not issued any immediate statements in response to the reported strike.

Such operations targeting Russian bases are intended to weaken Moscow’s ability to carry out air operations while highlighting Ukraine’s strike capabilities. In a notable operation last month, Ukraine claimed to destroy dozens of Russian aircraft deep within Russian territory using a coordinated drone attack.
Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched 322 drones and decoys overnight into Saturday. Of this number, 157 were brought down by Ukrainian forces, while 135 were reportedly neutralized through electronic jamming.
The Khmelnytskyi region in western Ukraine appeared to be the primary objective of Russia’s assault, according to the air force. Regional Governor Serhii Tyurin confirmed there were no casualties or structural damage as a result.
Russian forces have ramped up long-range bombardments recently. A wave of missiles and drones struck Kyiv on Friday in what was described as the most extensive aerial attack since the conflict began. On Saturday, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that the death toll had climbed to two, with 31 others injured.

The new wave of violence followed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's announcement on Friday that he had a “very important and productive” discussion with U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to Zelenskyy, the two leaders talked about boosting Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, the possibility of joint weapons production between the two nations, and further collaboration on resolving the conflict with Russia.
President Trump, when asked about the conversation by reporters on Friday evening, remarked, “We had a very good call, I think.”
When questioned about prospects for ending the war, Trump replied, “I don’t know. I can’t tell you whether or not that’s going to happen.”
While the U.S. has halted certain military assistance deliveries to Ukraine, including critical anti-aircraft systems, European allies are evaluating ways to fill the void. President Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine is working on expanding its domestic weapons production, but acknowledged that building the necessary capacity will take time.
Russia’s Defense Ministry reported downing 94 Ukrainian drones during the night leading into Saturday, with an additional 45 intercepted later that day. Though no injuries were reported, officials in Saratov noted property damage affecting 25 apartments in the city of Engels.
Furthermore, four Ukrainian drones were intercepted near Moscow on Saturday, according to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. As a safety measure, operations at Sheremetyevo Airport were temporarily suspended, confirmed Russia’s aviation agency.
