Polish fighter jets blocked Russian planes above Baltic Sea, official reports
WARSAW, Oct 30 (Reuters) – Polish MiG-29 fighter jets intercepted a Russian surveillance aircraft over the Baltic Sea on Thursday, marking the second similar event this week, according to Poland’s Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz.
The Polish military reported on Wednesday that their fighter aircraft intercepted a Russian plane engaged in a reconnaissance mission on Tuesday. The incident took place in international airspace over the Baltic Sea. The Russian aircraft had no active flight plan and its transponder was disabled.
"Today, MiG-29s intercepted another Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea," Kosiniak-Kamysz said, noting the similarity to Tuesday’s event.
No additional information was provided regarding the encounter.
NATO members located along the alliance’s eastern border have remained especially alert following a series of airspace violations. In September, three Russian military jets entered Estonia’s airspace for 12 minutes, shortly after more than 20 Russian drones crossed into Polish airspace.
