BET Awards: Druski set to become youngest-ever host as ceremony celebrates Lauryn Hill and Teyana Taylor

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Druski is set to become the youngest host in BET Awards history on Sunday, as the ceremony celebrates major talents including Lauryn Hill and Teyana Taylor, with performers such as Cardi B, Doechii and Queen Latifah expected to light up the stage.

At 31, Druski will break the previous record held by Kevin Hart, who was the show’s youngest host when he took on the role in 2011.

The comedian and online personality will lead the live broadcast from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles at 8 p.m. EDT.

Who is nominated?

Cardi B tops this year’s nominations with six, followed closely by Kendrick Lamar and Mariah the Scientist with five each. Doechii, Doja Cat, Clipse, Teyana Taylor, Olivia Dean and Latto each earned four nominations.

Contenders for album of the year include Cardi B’s “Am I the Drama?,” Clipse’s “Let God Sort Em Out,” J. Cole’s “The Fall-Off,” Leon Thomas’ “Mutt Deluxe: Heel,” Mariah the Scientist’s “Hearts Sold Separately,” Tyler, the Creator’s “Don’t Tap the Glass,” Bruno Mars’ “The Romantic,” and Wale’s “everything is a lot.”

The race for song of the year features several standout hits, including Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “Luther,” Leon Thomas’ “Mutt,” Doechii’s “Denial Is a River,” and Mariah the Scientist’s “Burning Blue.”

Who are the show’s performers?

The initial lineup of performers includes Cardi B, Common, Doechii, Don Toliver, French Montana, Jill Scott, Kehlani, Queen Latifah, Rick Ross, Tems, T.I. and The War And Treaty.

MC Lyte, a trailblazer in hip-hop, will return as the announcer for the evening.

Who will host the show?

Druski is expected to bring his quick-witted improvisation and signature online humor to the BET Awards stage.

He first gained widespread attention through viral comedy sketches on social media, later building that momentum into sold-out stand-up tours and high-profile collaborations with artists such as Drake and Snoop Dogg, along with appearances beside figures including Tom Brady and Timothée Chalamet.

“I grew up watching the BET Awards,” Druski said. “Seeing the comedy legends who hosted before me set the standard so high. I’m honored to be part of that legacy, and I’m bringing my own flavor to the stage.”

Who will receive special honors?

Lauryn Hill will be presented with the Living Legend Icon Award, recognizing artists whose influence has remained powerful across generations. She first rose to prominence with the Fugees before releasing her groundbreaking solo album, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” a genre-blending project that became one of the most impactful records in hip-hop and R&B.

BET described Hill as the embodiment of a living legend, praising her for transforming music and inspiring countless artists who followed.

Teyana Taylor, known for her role in “One Battle After Another,” will receive the Icon of the Year Award, honoring a multifaceted creative whose work continues to shape contemporary culture. She has expanded her career from multiplatinum recording artist to acclaimed actor, director, producer and choreographer.

Music executive Sylvia Rhone will be honored with the Ultimate Icon Award for her pioneering leadership and enduring contributions to the music business.

Rhone broke barriers as the first Black woman to head a major record label owned by a Fortune 500 company. Over the course of her career, she has played a key role in developing artists such as Missy Elliott, Lil Wayne, Tracy Chapman, Brandy, Erykah Badu, Kid Cudi, Future, Travis Scott and Giveon.

Are there any other standout nominees?

This year’s ceremony will also spotlight categories such as the Pulse Award, recognizing creators and digital content series, and the Fashion Vanguard Award, celebrating cultural influence and innovation in fashion.
