A new eruption has begun in Guatemala at the Fuego volcano, regarded as one of the most active and dangerous volcanoes on the planet. Streams of lava are once again pouring from its crater, while massive clouds of ash and smoke are rising high into the sky.

Due to the sharp increase in volcanic activity, authorities have declared an orange alert across the country, the second-highest warning level. At the same time, evacuations have started for residents living in communities at the foot of the volcano to ensure their safety.

Fuego is part of the Sierra Madre mountain range and lies about 16 kilometers west of Antigua, one of Guatemala’s most popular tourist destinations.

The volcano is known for its near-constant activity: minor ash emissions, smoke releases, and small explosions occur approximately every 15–20 minutes. However, major eruptions happen less frequently. The current event marks the ninth large-scale eruption since 2015 and the third within the past four years.

The previous significant eruption took place in 2023, when around 1,700 people were evacuated from high-risk areas. One of the most devastating disasters occurred in 2018, when lava flows and pyroclastic surges buried nearby settlements, claiming the lives of 215 people.
