Russia-Ukraine Conflict: Key Events on Day 950

This is the situation as of Wednesday, October 2, 2024.

Clashes and Conflict

• In the southern city of Kherson, located along the western shore of the Dnipro River, Russian artillery shelling hit a market, resulting in six fatalities and leaving three others wounded. Additionally, six more individuals sustained injuries while waiting at a bus stop as the city came under further Russian fire.

• In the Zaporizhia region, Russian airstrikes targeted residential areas and infrastructure, resulting in the death of one person and injuring 32 others, Governor Ivan Fedorov reported.

• Ukraine’s military claimed to have intercepted and destroyed 29 out of 32 Iranian-manufactured drones launched by Russia, which were aimed at central, southern, and northeastern regions of Ukraine.

• Vadym Filashkin, the governor of Donetsk, reported that Russian forces had reached the center of Vuhledar, a town in the embattled Donbas region of eastern Ukraine. While it remains unclear if full control of the town, which has been ravaged by war, was achieved, approximately 107 civilians remain there. The population of Vuhledar was around 14,000 prior to the conflict.

• Russian forces claimed to have seized two additional frontline villages – Krutyi Yar in Donetsk and Vyshneve in the northeastern Kharkiv region, according to RIA, a state-run Russian news agency.

• Ukraine observed a nationwide moment of silence on Defenders Day to honor the fallen soldiers, as the country marks its third year since Russia's invasion in 2022. While Kyiv has not publicized official figures, it is believed that tens of thousands of Ukrainian troops have perished in the conflict.

Political and Diplomatic Developments

• The United Nations’ Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine reported “widespread” Russian torture and abuse against Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) during all phases of captivity. The mission also found instances of mistreatment toward Russian POWs by Ukrainian forces, particularly in the early stages of detainment, but noted that such actions stopped once prisoners arrived at formal detention centers. “The extent and severity of abuse differ significantly” between the parties, said mission head Danielle Bell.

• Andriy Kostin, Ukraine’s Prosecutor General, announced that Kyiv was investigating the execution of 16 Ukrainian POWs who had surrendered to Russian forces on the eastern front. Kostin indicated the soldiers were believed to have been executed near Pokrovsk.

• Russian authorities reported the detention of 39 individuals, including nine teenagers, in several regions across the country, accusing them of supporting "Ukrainian terrorist" groups.

• Russia has released three journalists from independent media outlets who were detained while interviewing attendees at a Red Square ceremony, commemorating the two-year anniversary of the annexation of four Ukrainian territories. Each was fined 500 roubles (approximately $5) for “disorderly conduct,” including accusations of using inappropriate language in public spaces.

• NATO’s new Secretary-General, Mark Rutte, emphasized that assisting Ukraine remains his "primary focus." Rutte, a former Dutch prime minister, officially commenced his duties in the role on Tuesday.
