What we learned from the major Grand Theft Auto 6 preview
More than 18 months after the last official look at Grand Theft Auto 6, developer Rockstar has given fans a 26-minute preview of its highly anticipated blockbuster game.
The “extended look” premiered on Netflix six hours before arriving on YouTube, offering players their first opportunity to watch substantial footage of the title in action.
Presented without commentary or explanatory text, the montage highlighted upgraded visuals, richly detailed locations, and several car chases and gunfights from the sequel.
The broadcast arrived after a week of unauthorised gameplay leaks, which the developer described as “heartbreaking” to see circulating online.
Now that Rockstar has presented GTA 6 on its own terms, here is what the footage revealed—and what remains unanswered.
Much of the extended preview focused on the relationship between protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Camino, the couple leading GTA 6’s “Bonnie and Clyde”-inspired narrative.
In a separate media preview, the developers explained that the characters’ story and its development can be influenced by player choices, although users may “opt out” of strengthening their relationship.
The Netflix footage did not explore that system in depth, but it demonstrated that players can switch control between the two protagonists at various moments.
One sequence showed Jason helping Lucia down from a window as the pair fled a police drug raid at an apartment building.
Grand Theft Auto 5 featured a comparable switching mechanic across its three playable lead characters.
Reaction to GTA 6’s graphics was overwhelmingly positive, particularly its photorealistic faces and convincing character animation.
Viewers also praised the detailed settings, including apartment interiors, rooftop bars, and grimy underground nightclubs.
The presentation displayed several areas across Leonida, the fictional US state inspired by Florida in which GTA 6 takes place.
Many online viewers also noticed the broad variety of body types represented among background characters, a level of diversity still uncommon in video games.
Games journalist Ryan McCaffrey said GTA 6 “might be the best-looking game I’ve ever seen”.
Its remarkable visual quality has been linked to Rockstar’s lengthy development process and the game’s budget, which is believed to rank among the largest in industry history.
Although GTA 6 seems ready to establish new standards for visual detail and overall scale, it remains unmistakably a Grand Theft Auto title.
The preview included armed robberies, high-speed pursuits, and encounters within the criminal underworld—all familiar signatures of the series.
Satirical criticism of American culture, bleakly humorous conversations, and a wide selection of optional activities also returned.
Rockstar additionally appears to have developed ideas introduced in its previous major release, 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2, including an “honour” system that shapes how other characters perceive the player.
Long-time followers of the franchise, which is estimated to have sold around half a billion copies since debuting in 1997, will likely have welcomed what they saw.
Rockstar previously confirmed that GTA 6 will launch as a “single-player experience”, leading many fans to expect a successor to the hugely profitable online component at a later date.
The Netflix presentation concentrated on narrative and gameplay, so it was not necessarily intended to introduce multiplayer functions.
While the game’s 19 November release is widely predicted to become the largest launch in entertainment history, GTA 6’s lasting performance may depend on Rockstar’s ability to move players into a future online mode.
GTA Online, which arrived after GTA 5, remains among the world’s most widely played games and is believed to have earned Rockstar billions of dollars.
The previous instalment, GTA 5, also set records when it launched in 2013 and has since sold more than 200 million copies.
The two official trailers for the sixth game have attracted almost 500 million combined YouTube views, while Netflix promoted Thursday’s “extended look” as a major event.
Despite many new gameplay details, Rockstar has yet to explain how a potential online mode will operate or when it might become available.
Further information about multiplayer, pricing, and post-launch plans is therefore likely to emerge closer to release.
