Clampdown on Climate Protests
Authorities in Germany are intensifying their crackdown on a group of climate activists. The organization, known as Last Generation, faces mounting political and legal pressures. Having come into the spotlight relatively recently, in 2021, Last Generation uses a form of protest referred to as “direct action.” These tactics involve non-violent yet disruptive demonstrations aimed at highlighting the urgency of the climate emergency. The group’s activities range from blocking roadways and creating traffic jams to vandalizing artworks and even attempting to breach oil pipelines. Some conservative and far-right politicians have begun labeling the group’s members with terms such as “criminal,” “terrorist,” and “extremist,” igniting a broader conversation over where activism potentially crosses into “extremism.”
