Mexican mayor weds caiman in vibrant cultural ceremony

SAN PEDRO HUAMELULA, Mexico, July 3 – In the southern part of Mexico, the town of San Pedro Huamelula hosts an extraordinary annual event: a symbolic wedding between the local mayor and a female reptile resembling an alligator.

This time-honored tradition, which dates back over 230 years, signifies the cultural alliance between two indigenous groups of Oaxaca state — the Chontal and the Huave — and is thought to invite prosperity and harmony to the town.

This year, Mayor Daniel Gutierrez carried out the ritual by marrying a female caiman named by the community as Miguelana Estela del Mar Zavaleta Ramirez, affectionately known as the "princess girl."

The ceremony involves the reptile being dressed in a white bridal gown and taken around the town while people celebrate with music and dancing during her visit to local homes.

The union is sealed with a ceremonial kiss from the mayor, symbolizing his devotion and duty to his heritage and the people he serves.

In the context of the tradition, the caiman represents the Huave princess, and the mayor reflects the Chontal king. The legend behind the ritual tells of a peaceful marriage agreement that resolved historic rivalries between the two communities. The reenactment of their bond continues today as a gesture of unity and shared identity.

"This ritual is how we appeal to the earth and the divine for blessings in our harvests, fishing, and all the natural gifts our region provides," shared local resident Luis Manuel Lopez.

The entire celebration lasts three days, filled with traditional music, dancing, and colorful cultural expressions. The caiman is dressed by a woman known as her "godmother" in three distinct outfits: including a vivid Zoque-style dress, a multicolored skirt, and flowered accessories.

The symbolic marriage, attended by residents and visitors, marks the finale of the local festivities held in honor of San Pedro Apostol, the town’s patron saint.

"Our town is rich in heritage, and once again, San Pedro Huamelula proudly stands in the global spotlight," proclaimed Mayor Gutierrez.
