Elton John reveals vision loss and challenges in watching his latest stage musical

LONDON (AP) — Elton John has revealed that he found it difficult to watch the debut of his latest musical due to vision loss caused by an infection.

The renowned artist attended the premiere of “The Devil Wears Prada” in London on Sunday. Speaking to the audience, he shared, “I couldn’t make it to many of the previews because, as most of you know, I’ve lost my eyesight.”

“While it’s challenging for me to see it, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it, and wow, it sounded fantastic tonight,” John remarked.

The 77-year-old musician first shared news of his vision troubles in September, explaining that an infection had left him “with only partial sight in one eye.” On Instagram, he provided an update, saying, “The healing process is underway but incredibly slow. It will take time for my vision to recover in the affected eye.”

John composed the music for “The Devil Wears Prada,” a new stage adaptation of the 2006 film depicting a young journalist’s journey through the dazzling yet challenging world of fashion publishing.

The production, held at London’s Dominion Theatre, features Vanessa Williams in the role of Miranda Priestly, the intimidating editor originally portrayed by Meryl Streep in the movie.

The glitzy Sunday night event was a fundraiser benefiting the Elton John AIDS Foundation and drew numerous celebrities and fashion icons, including designer Donatella Versace and Anna Wintour, former Vogue editor and the rumored muse for Priestly’s character.

Wintour praised the show, calling it “delightfully entertaining.”
