Finnish Airline Cancels Over a Hundred Flights: Reasons Revealed
Finnair has announced the cancellation of over 100 scheduled flights on May 19 due to ongoing strikes at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, according to reports by Yle.
The airline is advising travelers scheduled to fly on Monday to complete check-in ahead of time and arrive at the airport punctually to minimize disruptions.
The protest action has been initiated by the Finnish Aviation Union (IAU - Ilmailualan Unioni), which is leveraging the strike to accelerate negotiations with Finland’s Service Sector Employers Association. These talks aim to establish a new collective agreement for air transport services, with a key focus on achieving better wages for aviation industry workers.
Flight Disruptions Across Europe – Key Developments
Previously, in late February 2025, the Munich Airport experienced widespread flight cancellations as airport staff went on strike. At the time, airlines were expected to ground the majority of the 1,600 flights scheduled across two days, potentially affecting up to 80% of air traffic.
Similarly, on February 13, all commercial flights to and from Belgium were suspended as air traffic controllers joined a general national strike. The widespread protest opposed government initiatives to reduce public service spending, including controversial changes to the pension system.
