Gas pipeline explosion ignites massive blaze in Malaysia, leaving over 100 hurt

A massive blaze triggered by a ruptured gas pipeline engulfed multiple homes and sent a towering fireball into the air near Malaysia’s capital on Tuesday, leaving over 100 people injured.

The blaze erupted in Putra Heights, a suburb outside Kuala Lumpur, close to a fuel station. The dramatic flames, visible for miles, burned for hours. The incident took place during a public holiday as Muslims across the country observed the second day of the Eid celebration.

Malaysia’s state-owned energy company, Petronas, confirmed that the fire originated from one of its gas lines around 8:10 a.m. The pipeline was quickly isolated to prevent further danger. Authorities handling the emergency indicated that closing off the pipeline valves would allow the fire to gradually burn out.

According to the Selangor fire department, the flames — which at their peak reached the height of a 20-story building — subsided enough for crews to move in closer by 2:45 p.m., as reported by The Star newspaper.

Officials reported damage to no fewer than 49 homes, with 112 individuals sustaining injuries. Of those, 63 were hospitalized with burn wounds, breathing issues, and other related injuries, said Deputy Police Chief Mohamad Zaini Abu Hassan in a statement carried by the Bernama news agency.

Amirudin Shari, the Chief Minister of Selangor, noted that fire crews evacuated area residents as a precaution, placing them in nearby mosques until the hazard is fully neutralized.

Videos and images of the explosion rapidly circulated online, with local residents sharing accounts of violent shaking strong enough to rattle windows and doors.

One resident, Lee Weng Ken, suffered burns to his leg when the ceiling of his house gave way and the debris crushed his car parked in the yard. “I tried to escape, but I tripped and was burned by the intense heat nearby,” he told Bernama.

Another man, who identified himself only as Andy, said he fled with his children upon feeling vibrations and spotting the enormous fire around 100 meters (328 feet) from their house. “I only had time to drive the car out. My daughter, who’s 18, hurt her foot after falling while climbing over a fence in the heat,” he said.

Petronas reported the temporary closure of three gas stations near the area for safety reasons. Although those locations were not directly impacted, the company stated that a full investigation into the cause of the explosion is currently underway.
