Disney and ITV join forces in new streaming partnership
LONDON, July 10 (Reuters) - U.S. media powerhouse Walt Disney and British network ITV have announced a content-sharing agreement that will see select programming made available across both Disney+ and ITVX platforms in the UK, aiming to broaden their reach and engage new viewers, the companies revealed on Thursday.
Subscribers to Disney+ in the UK will soon gain access to some of ITVX's most popular titles such as the drama "Mr Bates vs The Post Office," reality hit "Love Island," and the espionage series "Spy Among Friends." These shows will be bundled in a collection called "A Taste of ITVX" and will be available without extra fees.
In return, viewers on ITVX will be offered a rotating catalog of programming from Disney+, labeled "A Taste of Disney+." This collection will include, among others, the debut seasons of acclaimed series such as "The Bear" and "Only Murders in the Building," also at no additional cost.
With competition intensifying among streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and the BBC's iPlayer, both Disney and ITV are seeking new ways to grow their online audiences.
Disney offers multiple subscription options in the UK, including a lower-tier plan that features advertisements.
ITVX mainly operates through ad-supported streaming, though it also provides a paid premium option for viewers who prefer an ad-free experience.
As part of this partnership, advertising for the "A Taste of Disney+" section on ITVX will be managed by ITV, while Disney will oversee ads for the ITVX content featured on Disney+ for users on the ad-supported tier, according to the companies.
