+20 Degrees in January: Five European Islands for a Warm Winter Escape

For many travelers seeking warmth during winter, the most popular destinations often lie far beyond Europe. However, if you prefer to keep travel time to a minimum, the European continent has a few spots where temperatures hover around a pleasant 20°C even in the colder months.

Among these, the Canary Islands immediately come to mind, but they aren’t the only places in Europe where you can bask in winter sunshine. Other fantastic options await as well.

Here are five European islands selected by UNIAN that are worth considering if you’re craving some sunshine and relaxation this winter.

1. Tenerife: The largest and best-known of Spain’s Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa, Tenerife is often nicknamed the "Island of Eternal Spring." Here, the sun shines year-round, with average January temperatures just over 18°C and highs reaching up to 28°C. The island’s most iconic attraction is Mount Teide, but keep in mind that it can be cooler at higher altitudes, sometimes even snowy in winter. 2. Madeira: This Portuguese archipelago offers tourists mild January temperatures of around 16°C, which can climb to a comfortable 21°C on warmer days. Although winter is considered the rainy season here, the islands’ unique microclimates ensure a pleasant overall experience. The northwest part of Madeira is the wettest and cloudiest, while Funchal’s outskirts enjoy sunnier weather. On Porto Santo Island, you'll even find a semi-arid climate. More tips on visiting Madeira can be found in our separate guide.

3. Cyprus: This small island nation in the eastern Mediterranean delights visitors with pristine beaches, turquoise waters, delicious cuisine, and a wealth of history. In January, average temperatures sit around 17°C, with highs sometimes reaching 24°C. Discover what Cyprus has to offer in winter by reading our additional insights.

4. El Hierro: The smallest of the Canary Islands, El Hierro often gets overshadowed by its larger siblings like Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura. Still, this island, home to just over 10,000 people, boasts Spain’s westernmost and southernmost points. Designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2000, El Hierro is a protected natural haven rich in unique ecosystems. January temperatures average 19°C, with highs approaching 24°C and record peaks of 28.5°C.

5. Azores: Another Portuguese archipelago, the Azores, offers year-round warmth and jaw-dropping natural beauty. These volcanic islands, blanketed in lush greenery and surrounded by azure waters, are also home to Portugal’s tallest peak, Mount Pico. January temperatures typically range around 17°C, but can rise to 21°C on warmer days.
