Romania Denies Russian Missile Crossing Border During Attack on Ukraine

The Romanian air surveillance system, which operates as part of NATO's integrated defense network, did not detect any breach of the country's airspace by a Russian missile during a large-scale strike targeting critical infrastructure in Ukraine.

"The Romanian military authorities were notified by their Ukrainian counterparts that at around 7:30 a.m., a missile launched by the forces of the Russian Federation, which was expected to land in Ukraine's Chernivtsi region, crossed the airspace of the Republic of Moldova and for approximately two minutes, also violated Romanian airspace near the northern area of Dorobani," the Romanian Ministry of National Defense (MApN) announced in a press release.

Specialized MApN teams are continuing their investigation into the incident to fully clarify the circumstances surrounding it.

Additionally, resources and personnel assigned to air policing operations—under both national command and NATO oversight—remain on constant alert to safeguard the airspace of Romania and allied nations, according to the Ministry's statement.

Details on the Incident with the Russian Missile

The Republic of Moldova, for its part, confirmed the transit of the Russian missile through its airspace. According to a statement on the Moldovan government's Telegram channel, a border patrol observed the missile flying toward the Yampil-Koseuts area.

Furthermore, the missile crossed the border near Otaci-Mohyliv-Podilskyi before briefly exiting Moldovan airspace into Romanian territory, specifically near the Dorohoy-Herța region.

Meanwhile, the Telegram channel "Nikolaevske Vanyok" reported that the Kh-101 missile, which traversed both Moldovan and Romanian airspace, "successfully struck a field."

"It left plenty to see; we can travel to Romania and Moldova to showcase what is flying in their airspace," the report added with a hint of irony.

Russia’s Massive Missile Assault on December 25

Earlier reports from UNIAN detailed that Russia deployed over 70 missiles and drones as part of the massive attack on Ukraine's critical infrastructure. "Putin intentionally chose Christmas for this assault. What could be more inhumane?" remarked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The widespread missile strikes also triggered renewed power outages across Ukraine. As confirmed by "Ukrenergo," scheduled blackouts are expected to persist until the end of the day.
