Second Sphere entertainment venue officially unveiled

Las Vegas will soon lose its status as the only city with a giant, illuminated Sphere.

Officials from Sphere Entertainment Co. and Abu Dhabi’s tourism sector have unveiled plans to introduce a similar spherical venue in Abu Dhabi. This new development was announced on Tuesday and will highlight multimedia entertainment in much the same way as its Las Vegas counterpart.

The venture supports the broader goals of the United Arab Emirates’ capital under its Tourism Strategy 2030, which seeks to cement Abu Dhabi’s role as a thriving hotspot for culture and cutting-edge innovation, noted Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi, in a formal statement.

“Embracing leading-edge entertainment concepts like the Sphere not only enhances our international reputation but also raises the bar for immersive cultural experiences,” Al Mubarak remarked.

James L. Dolan, executive chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment, emphasized that the Abu Dhabi project aligns with the company’s long-term vision for creating a “global network of unique venues.”

Although the exact location of Abu Dhabi's Sphere has yet to be disclosed, the announcement confirmed that it is projected to be on a comparable scale to Las Vegas' 20,000-seat venue.

The Las Vegas Sphere launched in September 2023, kicking off with a series of performances by world-renowned rock band U2.

With dimensions of 366 feet (112 meters) in height and 516 feet (157 meters) in width, the Las Vegas Sphere holds the title of the world’s largest spherical structure. Inside, it features what has been described as the highest-resolution LED display in the world, offering an all-encompassing visual spectacle. Additionally, the building’s exterior is equipped with 1.2 million LED lights, each the size of a hockey puck, capable of rendering dynamic, large-scale visuals, making it another contender for one of the world’s largest displays.

The price tag to create the Vegas Sphere? A monumental $2.3 billion.

The development of the Abu Dhabi Sphere hinges on the finalization of agreements between Sphere Entertainment and local tourism authorities. The announcement mentioned a “franchise initiation fee” that would be paid to Sphere Entertainment, while funding for the construction would come from Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism.

As of yet, no details regarding the timeline or estimated costs of the Abu Dhabi venue have been disclosed.
